2 New York residents charged with manslaughter after infant suffocated to death

Two people have been charged with manslaughter and other counts in connection with the death of their infant child.

Joshua Lewis, 31, and Sammantha Bonham, 29, of Painted Post, were indicted by a Steuben County grand jury on charges of second-degree manslaughter, a felony, endangering the welfare of a child, and second-degree falsifying business records, both misdemeanors.

Bonham was also charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a felony.

The indictment follows an investigation by the Steuben County Sheriff's Office into an incident that took place March 18 on Beck Drive in the Town of Cameron, where Lewis and Bonham lived at the time.

Investigators allege Bonham was high on opioids at the time of the incident and passed out on top of the infant, causing the child to suffocate, according to Sheriff Jim Allard.

It took several months to get results of toxicology screenings back and gather other information before the case could be presented to a grand jury, Allard said.

Lewis and Bonham were taken into custody over the weekend after the grand jury handed up a sealed indictment. They are both being held at the Steuben County Jail.

Steuben County Child Protective Services and the Corning Police Department assisted in the investigation.
