The tail end of a storm swept across Maryland yesterday with the result, according to the weather man, that weather conditions today will be unsettled with occasional rains and probably a thunderstorm. The storm came from the Ohio Valley, and it is likely that cooler weather will follow its wake.

Seventy-seven members were enrolled in the Farm Bureau canvass yesterday, conducted by teams in the Thurmont, Mt. Pleasant, Emmitsburg and Urbana districts. The total membership now is 472. Ballenger district will be canvassed today.

The machine of H.W. Kerr, Baltimore, collided with a Hagerstown and Frederick Railway car on North Market street between Church and Second streets Thursday evening. The machine was coming upstreet and had gotten between the trolley rails, and the driver was unable to get out when he saw the Thurmont trolley coming downstreet, it is claimed. The trolley struck the machine knocking it against the curb.

Although an accident investigated at the intersection of Md. 26 and Md. 355 Tuesday afternoon was listed as a minor mishap, at least one person who works in the vicinity thinks something should be done to make the junction safer. Paula Compton, an employee of nearby Routzahn's Department Store, said she sees accidents there "all the time. I lose count of all of them. I'm serious." She said many of her fellow workers will drive out of their way just to avoid going through that intersection.

A "ball of fire" was sighted over Frederick Tuesday night, and though it could not be confirmed, there's a strong possibility the fireball actually was a newly found comet. According to the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., Comet Austin was expected in the northwest sky about 9 p.m. But Catherine Jenkins of Ridgeville, said she saw a "ball of fire" traveling from the northern horizon to the southern horizon about 9:40 p.m. Mrs. Ada Moore, of Motter Place, was out on the porch with her mother about the same time when they saw what appeared to be a comet or meteorite. She described it as "a rounded trail of gold sparks."
