20 children at Topsfield summer camp attacked, stung by swarm of bees, officials say

Twenty children at a summer camp in Topsfield are recovering after they were attacked and stung by a swarm of bees earlier this week.

Emergency crews responding to a 911 call from the coordinator of the Tritown Council Leg Morning Workshop Summer Camp at Trinity Church on Monday learned at least 20 children and staffers had been stung, with some suffering multiple multiple bee stings, Topsfield police and fire officials said.

After evaluating those who reported being stung, it was determined that just one child needed to be taken to the hospital with signs of anaphylaxis, according to officials.

The Topsfield Fire Department credited workshop coordinators Kevin Husson and Sue Thompson, as well as TTC Horizons Coordinator Director Beth Whalley, for their “swift and decisive actions in recognizing that a hive had been disturbed.”

Officials also noted that their decision to remove all of the children to safety “undoubtedly prevented more serious injuries.”

The children attending camp had been working with Lego robotics and learning engineering.
