20 fire companies put out Edison warehouse blaze

EDISON – Nearly two dozen fire companies battled a blaze for almost 12 hours Tuesday into Wednesday at a large commercial warehouse on Route 27.

Township firefighters responded around 2:43 p.m. Tuesday to Newport Distribution Services on Route 27 where they reported smoke coming from the roof and multiple fires in the center of the building, said Edison Fire Chief Andrew Toth.

The employees self-evacuated by the time firefighters arrived and there were no injuries, Toth said.

The products in the warehouse – solar panels and auto parts – were housed on wood pallets burning underneath, making it difficult to extinguish the flames, Toth explained.
