20 Leon County school zones will soon see a lower speed limit
To comply with new state standards, some school zones in Leon County will see a drop in the speed limit.
The Florida Department of Transportation is in the process of updating the signs at 20 schools, changing the speed limit from 20 mph to 15 mph.
“Bottom line, it’s safety,” said FDOT spokesperson Ian Satter. “By lowering the speed limit, we are helping reduce the chances of crashes with pedestrians in those regions."
In 2019, the Florida Legislature passed a law that dropped the speed limits in both urban and rural areas. In urban areas, the speed limit is being reduced to 15 miles per hour. In rural areas, the speed zone is changing to 20 miles per hour.
FDOT began changing school zone signs in northwest Florida in the summer of 2022 and will finish in the summer of 2023, Satter said.
The change is statewide and also includes improving signage and installing flashing beacons in some school zones.
The following schools in Leon County will now have a reduced speed limit of 15 miles per hour:
Bond Elementary School
Buck Lake Elementary School
Canopy Oaks Elementary School
Cobb Middle School
DeSoto Trail Elementary School
