20-year-old college student and her father ID’d as victims killed in crash in Fresno

A 20-year-old college student and her 50-year-old father have been identified as the two people killed in a car crash early Monday south of Fresno.

Rogelio Avila was driving his daughter, Yessenia Avila, to class at Fresno Pacific University when he collided with a big-rig trailer at the intersection of Chestnut and Annadale avenues. There was dense fog at the time and the California Highway Patrol believes Avila was unable to see the trailer turning in front of him.

The Fresno County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identities Tuesday morning.

Both were from Parlier.

Yessenia Avila graduated from Parlier High School in 2021, according to a message the district posted on social media. She was at Fresno Pacific studying to become a doctor.

Rogelio Avila was an electrician, and is survived by his wife, a son and granddaughter, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up for the family: “Today we not only lost one, but two of our beloved family members.”
