20-year-old man charged with murder in Brockton double shooting

BROCKTON – A 20-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with Tuesday night's shooting that left one man dead and another with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said Friday.

Donya Johnson pleaded not guilty in Brockton District Court on Friday afternoon to one count each of murder, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm without an FID card, discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling and carrying a loaded firearm without a license, the district attorney's office said.

Nerilson Lopes, 25, was shot and killed and another man was shot and wounded in the incident, Cruz said.

About 8:35 p.m. Tuesday, Brockton police officers and firefighters responded to reports of the double shooting in a parking lot in the area of 987 North Main St.

"(Officers) located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest," the DA's office said.

"He was transported to Good Samaritan (Medical Center) where he was pronounced dead."

The second male victim traveled to the same hospital in a personal motor vehicle for "treatment of non-life-threatening injuries," a press release from the DA's office said.

The Brockton Police Department and state police officers assigned to the district attorney's office are working on the ongoing investigation.

Johnson is scheduled to appear June 23 for his next court hearing.

Assistant District Attorneys Shanan Buckingham and Jennifer Sprague are prosecuting the case, which was investigated by Massachusetts State Police and Brockton police.

This is the fifth homicide in Brockton in 2022.
