20-year-old man dead following head-on collision Wednesday night on Interstate 72

A 20-year-old man is dead following a head-on collision Wednesday on Interstate 72 between Buffalo and Illiopolis.

Illinois State Police said that at 11:20 p.m., District 9 troopers were called to the scene of an accident in which one vehicle, traveling the wrong way on eastbound I-72 near mile marker 118, collided with another vehicle.

Mile marker 118 is midway between the exits for Buffalo and Illiopolis.

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon said the driver of the car that was hit was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle traveling the wrong way was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

An autopsy for the deceased driver is pending. ISP and the coroner's office are currently investigating the incident.
