- So here's a question. When you've already won the Boston Marathon, what can you do to possibly top that?

- Well if you are Des Linden, you set a goal to break a world record and you crush it in your first attempt. The 2018 Boston champ ran a 50k, just over 31 miles, in under three hours. She did it this morning on a bike path outside Eugene, Oregon. Just a small group of runners with her because of the pandemic. And what's incredible is that this is the first time that Des was competing at a distance longer than a 26.2 marathon.

Her official time was two hours, 59 minutes, 54 seconds. An average of five minute, 47 second miles over 31 miles. She beat the old record. I say "old," it was set in 2019, by more than seven minutes.

DES LINDEN: It was kind of exploring that uncharted territory, which I think is just fascinating. I've been in the sport for a really long time. And I never want to feel like I'm stagnating or bored with what I'm doing. This spring being clear just opened up that opportunity. And so it's really fun to just try something different.

- She is such a goal-setter. We're going to celebrate the runners like Des Linden who have helped make the Boston Marathon such an incredible event next Monday on Patriots Day. We'll also be looking ahead to the fall for this year's in-person race, October 11th. You can watch our Patriots Day special live Monday morning, 9 o'clock. Right here on WBZ and on CBS in Boston.
