From Car and Driver

BMW dealers have about a hundred brand-new M850i coupes in stock, so it may seem a little late for Munich to launch a First Edition. But by golly, they’re doing it---and you could be among the 400 people paying for BMW’s most expensive options.

Here’s the basic spec: A silvery matte blue exterior (Frozen Barcelona Blue, to be exact) on black 20-inch V-spoke wheels over a white and dark blue leather interior. For now, the paint and two-tone interior are exclusive to the First Edition, but don’t expect BMW to keep this combo from its Individual special-order book for too long. Additional features include gloss-black body trim, black exhaust tips, a blue microsuede headliner, and a glass gearshift knob (plus more glass trim on the iDrive controller, start-stop button, and volume knob). Some First Edition type with the car’s specific build number is etched on the center stack’s elegant covering for the cupholders. The M850i’s twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 sends 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque through a silky eight-speed automatic and a rear-biased all-wheel drive system. Those wanting more power should be first on the list for an M8.

BMW hasn’t announced a price or on-sale date for the First Edition, but Americans will nab about half of the 400-car run. Expect a price of at least $120,000, and that’s without options like the carbon fiber roof and probably without more options like a heated steering wheel that are more easily found on a Nissan Maxima. More than anything, we wish BMW would just put the M850i Night Sky into series production, with its seductive black-and-blue fade, star lights embedded into the armrest, and trim made from meteorites. The First Edition may be the second M850i to arrive, but among the many upcoming variants of this high-powered two-door, it certainly won't be the last.
