New Jersey pizzeria delivers free food to healthcare workers: 'The best job I’ve ever had'
A New Jersey restaurant is working hard to ease the unimaginable hardship the coronavirus pandemic is wreaking on healthcare workers in their state.
Bryan Morin and his brother, Michael, who operate Federico’s Pizza in Belmar, N.J., took out a $50,000 line of credit in mid-March to ensure all their employees could keep their jobs for at least two months after multiple area businesses were forced to close, he told the Associated Press.
Dubbing their mission “People over Profit,” the brothers said they quickly noticed customers started tipping extra and sending in donations to keep the neighborhood favorite afloat.
Soon, the generosity evolved into an unexpected surge of pay-it-forward donations: People from around the world began calling the pizzeria and asking them to charge their credit cards to send food to healthcare workers and other emergency workers fighting on the frontlines against COVID-19.
In just a two-day span in March, the Morins said they received nearly $4,000 in donations, which was used to feed countless workers at Jersey Shore Medical Center, among other first responders in the state hit second hardest by the growing pandemic.
Federico’s employee Kirsten Phillips told the Associated Press that even though her boss’s act of generosity was somewhat “unexpected,” the family-owned pizzeria has always taken care of its employees in the past.
“This is really the best job I’ve ever had,” she added.
