This insanely steep staircase on a cliff leads to an island paradise

Nusa Penida is an island southeast of Bali, Indonesia. The name translates to “Island of Priests” in Balinese, although locals sometimes call it the “Black Magic Island.” Unlike other Indonesian islands that are heavily populated with hotels and resorts, Nusa Penida is less so. Thus, it is considered one of the most photogenic sights in Southeast Asia.

Nusa Penida’s Kelingking Beach, in particular, is a highly regarded attraction. In a 2019 Instagram post, travel Influencer Thiago Lopez, for example, claimed that his trip to the beach “was the greatest adventure I have ever had in my life.”

In the clip above, you can see Lopez taking a staircase on a trail alongside the ridgeline of a cliff. While the path does have railing, it is notably steep, dirty and rocky.

According to travel blog Wandering Wheatleys, it takes about 45 minutes to hike down the cliff to the beach and an hour to get back to the starting point. Still, bloggers Nick and Val Wheatley say Kelingking beach “is well worth the effort to get to. It is a totally secluded white sand beach that doesn’t get crowded due to the intense effort that it takes to get there.”

The history of the island of Nusa Penida has been the stuff of mythology, travel blog Girl Eat World interestingly notes. Locals believed it was previously inhabited by dark spirits that priests from Bali had banished. Nevertheless, Nusa Penida remains an important religious site — locals strongly believe in balance in the universe and the importance of understanding the difference between good and evil.
