Female firefighters send empowering video message to young girls
Members of the Cincinnati Fire Department have taken it upon themselves to keep their reading program going through quarantine.
Since the fire department can no longer put on its preschool reading program in person, some of the female firefighters have decided to move the event online.
The firefighters got the idea to keep the program going after two little girls — 10-year-old Madison and 4-year-old Mya — “wrote and asked to meet some of [the] female firefighters,” according to the department’s Facebook post.
“We heard that some of our young friends wanted to learn about some female firefighters, so my friends and I got together and we found this book that we thought you would enjoy,” Captain Melissa Arnold says, referring to the book she is holding — “Girls Can Do Anything.”
Both parents and children are appreciative of the female firefighters’ efforts.
“Thanks for the fantastic effort. You’ve gotten the stamp of approval from one young girl in Melbourne, Australia (who has lots of family in Cincinnati),” one Facebook user commented.
“This lead to quite the conversation between my 9-year-old son and my 6-year-old daughter,” another person noted. “Thank you for this!!”
