UPDATE 12/6/18: Chevy has put out additional photos of the Silverado HD, this time of the top-of-the-line High Country trim (pictured below). While the Silverado 1500 is available in eight trim levels, the 2020 HD comes in just five: Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ, and High Country. The High Country gets a more traditional grille with a bowtie logo, unlike the LT Z71 that has a blockier face with Chevrolet stamped into the central chrome bar.

Chevrolet has released the first images and details of the 2020 Silverado HD, and the brand says that the new heavy-duty trucks will be "the most capable and most advanced" ever. That's all well and good, but what we really care about is the looks. The new Silverado HD, shown here in 2500 form in LT Z71 trim, looks so much better to our eyes than the standard Silverado 1500.

According to Chevy, the only body panel that the new Silverado HDs share with the regular 1500 is the roof; everything else is totally new. Like the 1500, the HD trucks have a funky, alien-like front end, but the aggression is turned up a notch, and it works well. The surfacing on the sides of the HD is smoother, and everything from the windows to the wheel arches is more squared off. Integrated steps in the bedsides are new, with Chevy saying they help with access to the available fifth-wheel hitch. At the rear, similarities to the 1500 are more pronounced, but the tailgate is less chiseled, and the bed itself is boxier. According to Chevy, the HDs have a taller seating position and three additional inches of legroom compared to the 1500. No interior photos have been released, but it should be close in appearance to that of the half-ton truck.

As with the current Silverado HD, two powertrains are on offer: a gasoline-drinking V-8 and a turbo-diesel V-8. Full specs aren't given for either engine, but Chevrolet says the gas engine is completely new and will be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission; the current V-8 is a 6.0-liter Vortec unit that makes 360 horsepower. The turbo-diesel, meanwhile, is mated to a 10-speed automatic and makes 910 lb-ft of torque (the same as the current Duramax motor). Chevy says that the Silverado HD will see "significant increases" when it comes to payload and towing-the brand surely wants to best the class-leading Ford F-Series Super Duty's maximum towing figures.

The Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD will make their formal debuts at the Chicago auto show in February, and the trucks will go on sale in mid-2019. Look for the heavy-duty versions of the GMC Sierra to be revealed soon as well, with many of the same cosmetic and mechanical upgrades as these Chevrolets.
