The Cadillac ATS and CTS helped changed perceptions of the American luxury brand. Suddenly, the company that made your old man's luxury barge was outdoing BMW at its own game. That means this car, the 2020 CT5, has a lot to live up to.
Cadillac is replacing the ATS and CTS with the CT5, and a yet-unnamed smaller rear-drive sports sedan. The CT5 will slot between the current ATS and CTS, while the other car will be a little smaller than the ATS. Cadillac plans to do a full reveal of the CT5 next month at the New York International Auto Show, but it's revealing some photos and info on its latest sports sedan ahead of time.
The CT5 rides on what Cadillac terms "an evolution" of GM's rear-drive Alpha platform, which currently underpins the ATS, CTS, CT6 and Chevy Camaro. Standard, you'll get a 2.0-liter turbo four, while a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 will be available as an option. Cadillac hasn't released any specs, but in the CT6, those engines offer 237 and 404 horsepower, respectively. Both will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive will be optional.
Design wise, the CT5 is an evolution of what's come before, sporting the new Cadillac corporate face we've seen on the face-lifted CT6 and new XT4 and XT6 SUVs. In profile, things are more different, with less of a dramatic rising beltline and a more coupe-like window shape.
Inside, well....we'll have to wait. The only image Cadillac has released thus far is of the shifter and infotainment controls. Hopefully the interior takes a step forward or two from the CTS-a weak point compared to its German rivals.
We're hoping there's a fire-breathing V version in the works, too. Perhaps a Chevy small block will fit under the hood, or maybe even Cadillac's new 4.2-liter twin-turbo V-8. Whatever powers it, it's got big shoes to fill.
In any case, we'll know a lot more about the CT5 when it makes its debut in New York in a month's time. Right now, we're going to pour one out for the CTS.
