The Nissan Z celebrates turning 50 with a special edition that honors its racing history.
The new-for-2020 appearance package features a distinct two-tone livery of the 240Z race car from 1970.
The first Datsun 240Z debuted in New York a half century ago.
UPDATE 4/23/19: Nissan has released pricing for the 2020 370Z's 50th Anniversary Edition package. It's a $2600 upcharge over the base Sport model, which starts at $30,895 with the manual and $32,385 with the automatic.
The original Datsun 240Z, with its affordable price and styling that brought to mind the Jaguar E-type, was an immediate success in the United States when it came here in 1970. Through the years, the Z car experienced some racing success as well as a few awkward periods, but we've all gone through those. The 2020 Nissan Z commemorates the former with a Special 50th Anniversary Edition inspired by the now iconic Brock Racing Enterprises (BRE) 240Z that won multiple SCCA national championships.
While the 2020 370Z will be available in four trim levels-base, Sport, Sport Touring, and NISMO-the 50th Anniversary Edition is based on the Sport model. While essentially just an appearance package, it includes the Z's naturally aspirated 3.7-liter V-6 that pumps out 332 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission with rev matching is standard; a seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is optional. Both gearboxes send power to the rear wheels through a standard limited-slip differential. The commemorative Z also wears a special set of 19-inch wheels with red accents wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires.
The 50th Anniversary Edition package consists of a two-tone paint scheme that is available in either white with red accents or silver with black accents. The striping on the side of the car along with the painted front roof pillars, hood, side mirrors, and trunk are inspired by the BRE Datsun 240Z. Other shared design cues include a narrow line that starts at the 370Z's unmistakable headlights and finishes near the rear window in a small triangle reminiscent of the BRE 240Z. The car is also adorned with black exterior mirrors, large hashmark decals on the side, and 50th Anniversary badging on the back and side. What it's not adorned with is the rear spoiler, deleted on this special edition.
Inside, the special edition is brimming with 50th Anniversary details. These extend to the steering wheel wrapped in faux suede, to the plate surrounding the shifter, and to the leather-trimmed seats. Heated front bucket seats are standard and include four-way power adjustments. The rest of the interior is laid out the same as the other 370Z models, featuring a gauge cluster attached to the steering column and a full-length center console. The special edition also enhances the cabin with dark-chrome accents and faux-suede door panels. An eight-speaker Bose audio system with active noise cancellation and sound enhancement is standard. While official pricing hasn't been released yet, we expect that to be announced before the 2020 370Z goes on sale this month.
