What It Is: Will Porsche be the first automaker in history to create an all-electric station wagon? We now have confirmation that the new Taycan EV will have a Sport Turismo longroof variant, thanks to these spy photos of a prototype. Porsche had hinted at such a vehicle with the Mission E Cross Turismo concept from earlier this year, and the more production-ready version you see here looks to be a conventional Sport Turismo wagon without that concept's raised ride height and extra body cladding (although that variant could still be in the cards, too).

Why It Matters: Porsche is looking to take on the luxury-EV establishment (read: Tesla) head on with the Taycan, so it's bolstering the lineup with a variety of versions to make a strong statement. The Panamera Sport Turismo started Porsche down this wagon path, and the Taycan will continue that trend, offering a unique proposition in its segment. While the Tesla Model S and the Jaguar I-Pace are hatchbacks, they don't quite have the sleek, low-slung, sporty look of this Taycan wagon that is befitting of a Porsche.

Platform: All Taycans will ride on a new dedicated EV platform. It places the battery pack in the floor between the axles, similar to the way other electric cars are configured.

Powertrain: Like the standard Taycan, the Sport Turismo will use dual electric motors, one in the front and one in the rear, to make around 600 horsepower. Range is estimated at 311 miles on a charge, and Porsche is working on fast-charging stations that it estimates will be able to replenish 250 miles of range in 15 minutes.

Competition: Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-Pace, Mercedes-Benz EQC, Tesla Model S, Tesla Model 3.

Estimated Arrival and Price: When it arrives sometime in 2019, the Taycan is expected to have a starting price-according to a recent report from Automotive News-somewhere between the current Cayenne and Panamera. That should put the standard model somewhere in the $70,000 range, with the Sport Turismo wagon commanding a slight premium as it does in the Panamera lineup.
