  • A redesigned version of the Toyota Highlander is debuting at the 2019 New York auto show next week.

  • A rendering of the new three-row SUV shows a similar profile as the current car, but with more body sculpting on the side and what looks like a more aggressive front end.

  • The 2020 Toyota Highlander officially debuts April 17 and should go on sale sometime by the end of 2019.

Toyota's Highlander is one of the older entries in the three-row SUV class, with the current generation having been around since 2014, so a redesign is in order. The fourth-generation 2020 Highlander is now officially scheduled to make its debut next week at the 2019 new York auto show, and Toyota's teaser image shows our first official glimpse at the crossover.

We can see more of the Highlander now than we could in spy photos from earlier this year, and it's clear that the change will be evolutionary from a styling perspective. The overall silhouette is similar but but side surfacing looks a bit more interesting, and we think the front- and rear-end styling will take cues from the smaller RAV4, which was redesigned for 2019 with chunkier, more aggressive looks.

Under the skin, we expect bigger changes. The Highlander is likely to migrate to a new platform, joining other Toyota models on the company's Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) underpinnings. This should improve driving dynamics and refinement. We're not sure how the Highlander's dimensions will change, but we wouldn't be surprised if it gets bigger. An updated version of Toyota's 3.5-liter V-6 should remain the key engine option, mated to an eight-speed automatic, with a hybrid drivetrain available as an option.

We'll learn more about the new 2020 Toyota Highlander soon enough as it makes its debut in New York April 17.
