A 2020 Toyota Supra and Mid-Engined Dodge Charger Were Just Spied Filming 'Fast 9'
The 2020 Toyota Supra will be featured in the next Fast and Furious film, based on photos posted to Instagram.
The orange-pained Supra Mk V seen in the photos pays tribute to the 1993 Toyota Supra Mk IV that the late Paul Walker drove in the original 2001 movie.
Also posted online is what appears to be a mid-engined, widebody Dodge Charger that will presumably be driven by Vin Diesel's character in the upcoming Fast 9.
Anyone who grew up watching the Fast & Furious movies knows that certain cars will always be connected to the characters who drove them, like a vehicular spirit animal, if you will. While Brian O'Conner (a.k.a the Buster)—played by the late Paul Walker—was linked to multiple cars over the course of the series, it was the orange 1993 Toyota Supra that he drove in The Fast and the Furious (2001) that resonated the most.
After Toyota resurrected the legendary nameplate for 2020, die-hard fans (including this author) couldn't help wondering when it would reappear in the insanely lucrative street-racing franchise. Unsurprisingly, several orange-painted Supra Mk Vs have been spotted filming on the set of the upcoming Fast 9, which debuts on May 22, 2020.

The images posted on Instagram by _pw40 show multiple orange Supras (an obvious tribute to Walker's original ride) being unloaded from a car hauler and being dragged all over the place by some sort of armored military vehicle. Unfortunately—or fortunately?—the new Supra doesn't sport its predecessor's iconic vinyl decals, towering rear wing, or aftermarket body kit. However, we'd wager there are two bottles of NOS under the Toyota's rear hatch—enough to blow the driver to pieces.
Of course, a Fast and Furious film isn't complete without Dominic Toretto (played by a bald-headed, mumble-growling, T-shirt-stretching Vin Diesel) driving a black 1970 Dodge Charger. While previous iterations of the movie muscle car have made "so much torque that the chassis twisted coming off the line" and battled nuclear submarines while speeding across a frozen lake, the latest Charger creation looks to have a mid-mounted supercharged engine. Undoubtedly, it's built for people who live their life a quarter-mile at a time, but we digress.
In the video we saw, posted to Instagram by chromecars.de, the blacked-out Charger is wearing a custom widebody kit as it pulls out onto a busy street. While the stripped-out interior and mid-mounted engine are clearly visible through the windshield and side windows, it's obvious that Vin Diesel isn't driving. He doesn't wear baseball caps, for starters.
