  • This is our best look yet at Genesis's upcoming GV70 compact luxury SUV.

  • Based on the same platform as the G70 sedan, this SUV will be smaller than its GV80 sibling but features similar styling to what we've seen from that upcoming mid-size crossover.

  • Genesis has yet to announce a reveal date, but we expect it to arrive early next year.

Hyundai's luxury brand Genesis has yet to sell an SUV to the SUV-crazed market, though several are coming soon. The mid-size GV80, based upon the upcoming next-gen G80 sedan, will be the first to arrive, but it will be followed by a smaller SUV, the GV70, shortly afterward. And we now have our first look of the GV70 testing at the Nürburgring.

The GV80 will be based on the same rear-drive platform as the G80, so it follows that the GV70 will ride on the platform used in the G70 sedan. The space between the front axle and the dashboard on this prototype confirm that these photos show a rear-drive-based SUV, and the more aggressively raked roofline and stance prove that it's smaller than the GV80.

Because the GV70 is an SUV, it will be offered with all-wheel drive either as an option or as standard (AWD is optional on the G70 sedan). The crossover will most likely be powered by either the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder or the more powerful twin-turbo 3.3-liter V-6 found in the G70 sedan, although a hybrid powertrain is a possibility down the road.

It is likely that we will hear more information about this new Genesis SUV by early next year, as it's likely to be revealed shortly after the larger GV80, which is slated to arrive in early 2020.
