The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX's Gas Mileage Is Hilariously Awful
We all knew it was going to be bad. I mean, the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX is a pickup truck with a 6.2-liter V-8 that puts out 702 supercharged horsepower. Every part of that suggests awful fuel economy. But even with all of those priors, the numbers released today are surprisingly terrible.
The official fuel economy still isn't on the EPA's fuel economy site. But as we noted in our first drive review, Ram already has the official numbers: 10 miles per gallon in the city and 14 on the highway for a combined score of 12 mpg. Christ alive.
Those numbers come from the official EPA drive cycle, which tends to be pretty charitable. In the real world, most vehicles—and especially most performance vehicles—will deliver lower results if you go normal speeds on the highway and accelerate with any enthusiasm. Blast around the city in the TRX, then, and you'll be at the painful end of single-digit mpgs. Gas may be cheap, but it ain't that cheap.
For reference, the 450-hp Ford F-150 Raptor gets a score of 15 mpg city and 18 mpg highway for a combined figure of 16 mpg. Not great, but remember that the scale is not linear. As you get lower fuel economy ratings, the differences between each mpg is larger. So a truck that gets 5 mpg will cost twice as much to fuel as a truck that gets 10 mpg, but a 25-mpg truck will only save you 25 percent compared to a 20-mpg truck. So those extra lost mpgs hurt, especially considering the kicker: the TRX requires premium gas.
