Here are the names of tropical storms and hurricanes for the 2021 season

Forecasters are expecting the 2021 hurricane season to be busy, and that means you’ll be hearing a lot of storm names in the next few months, a few of which will become hurricane names.

Last year was the busiest hurricane season ever from the standpoint of storm frequency as there were a record 30 named storms, 14 hurricanes, and a record-tying seven major hurricanes.

If the Atlantic basin comes near that mark again the Greek alphabet won’t be used. The annual list of storm names, which gets recycled every six years, features 21 names because the letters Q, U, X, Y and Z aren’t used because it’s believed names starting with those letters aren’t common enough or understood enough in local languages.

Storm names are maintained by an international committee that’s under guidance of the World Meteorological Organization. Storm names are retired after a storm causes so much death or financial damage it’s deemed inappropriate to have another storm by the same name.

The 2020 retired names are Laura, Eta and Iota, the last two being Greek names that wouldn’t have been repeated anyway. Leah will replace Laura on the 2026 list.
