Leavitt, which lost in the final seconds of the Class C South final against Cape Elizabeth, returns key players like Brett Coburn, Dayton Calder, Sawyer Hathaway and quarterback Noah Carpenter. The Hornets will have to retool the offensive line with the losses of Reeve Twitchell and Jack Boutaugh, but Leavitt has depth at a lot of positions and veteran play at others. "If we can get consistent and have the right mindset, we could go pretty far," coach Mike Hathaway said.

Season outlook: Lewiston first-year coach Jason Versey said that the Blue Devils are "coming off the best offseason strength and conditioning program it has seen in years." Versey spotlighted Farid Muhammad-Aceto, Eli Bigelow, Jaden Maynard and Joe Dube as players to watch this season. Dube was a Sun Journal All-Region first-team defense selection in 2021.

: For the first time, Lisbon will have lights at its home field will be able to play night games on Friday nights. On the field, Lisbon brings back many seniors, including Canaan Cameron and Colby Levasseur, both Sun Journal All-Region second-team players a year ago.

: Oak Hill is retooling this season after losing a litany of last year's seniors to graduation. A veteran offensive line and multiple running backs will help the Raiders' offense go. Maverick Swan got a lot of reps last year at running back and defensive back and is expected to be an important piece for Oak Hill in 2022.

: Eli Soehren is returning to quarterback the Vikings, who have high hopes after losing in the Class A title game to Thornton Academy a year ago. Lincoln Merrill, Tanner Bickford and Teigan Pelletier are among players returning that should help the Vikings again compete for the state championship.

: Coach Gus LeBlanc is excited about Poland's numbers, depth and experience this fall. The team returns three running backs, quarterback Lagan O'Driscoll, and three linemen on the offense. On defense, the Knights have a multitude of upperclassmen. LeBlanc said the team will be "considerably improved."

Trott was also the Class D defensive player of the year. The Ramblers return many other starters from a year ago, including eight starters on the defensive side.
