2022 Bike for Women race features plenty of camaraderie, charity and cool team names

May 2—CHUGIAK — Nearly 800 women and girls participated in the 22nd annual Bike for Women on Sunday with around 700 taking part in person at Chugiak High School and around 100 virtually, according to the event's director, Joann Mitchell.

The race has served as one of the top precursors to the Gold Nugget Triathlon and other races and has doubled as a fundraiser for Let Every Woman Know — Alaska charity, which is dedicated to raising awareness and providing support for women living with gynecological cancers.

"It is a great charity that needs to be supported," said Idamarie Piccard, who has participated in all but one year of the event's existence since its inception.

"It was there, it was an offering and it was a for-women event so I decided to do it," Piccard said.

The 83-year-old didn't pick up competitive biking until she was in her 60s. She participated in the race virtually for the first time this year because the hills on the course were too much for her but claims that her best time came when she was 63 and it was about 45 minutes. On Sunday, she was acting as a volunteer.

Piccard competed on a team with her daughter and granddaughter last year but was by herself for this year's event.

Like for Piccard and her family, The Bike for Women event has developed into a family affair for many. Amber Stull rode with her two daughters, who are 17 and 13. She was one of the top finishers in this year's event with a time of around 25 minutes.

Her oldest daughter's name — Cadence — was inspired by her and her husband's passion for cycling. Cadence is the number of revolutions per minute needed to keep a certain speed.

"I was pregnant with her and my husband was installing a cadence (monitor) on a bike and was like 'I think we should call her Cadence,' " Stull said. "I was like, 'Is that even a name?' "

Like Piccard, she doesn't think that it was her best performance to date but believes that she was pretty close to it. Stull has been competing in the event since the late 2000s. She was inspired to participate in this particular race because it brings women of all ages and athletic levels together for a good cause.

"The camaraderie of just all women of all sizes and all ages, all abilities, I just think it is awesome," Stull said.

Being able to compete with and along side her children is an added bonus that makes it even more special.

"That is the coolest thing about it," Stull said. "That's my most favorite part of the whole thing."

Bikes are the family business for the Stulls and "a huge part of our lives and lifestyle." She and her husband are the owners of Chain Reaction Cycles. They converted an old fire station into a bicycle shop that is located in South Anchorage off Huffman Road.

Biking is an activity she said her whole family enjoys and can do together.

"I am totally stoked and thrilled that all three of us have such a passion for it," Stull said. "We would support each other in whatever we wanted to do but it is very unique and awesome to have all three of us so excited for an event that we all like doing."

She says that participating in Bike for Women is so much fun because in addition to being a good charity, it allows women in the cycling community to establish and strengthen bonds with one another.

"When your friends are doing it, it's more exciting and motivating," Stull said. "It's good exercise but it's a social event too. A lot of women will come out and ride in groups and train together."

She compares the bonds that they form to being in a tribe.

"There's something really healthy about finding your tribe because it is a really good way to start if you don't know anybody," Stull said.

Some of the cyclist tribes that participated in the event with the most creative team names included Tour de Friends, the Estrogen Express, the Joy Riders and 'Whose Idea Was This?'

Mitchell used to compete in the race and first got involved with it because her daughter is a competitive cyclist who is now competing in college. Kelly Mitchell graduated from West Anchorage High School in 2019 and now attends Colorado Mesa University. She recently competed at the world championships for cyclo-cross which is a specific discipline of cycling and finished 18th out of 25 cyclists.
