The Billboard Music Awards announced their 2022 finalists on Friday. The awards show, which honors the year's most popular artists across 62 categories, will be broadcast live on NBC on Sunday, May 15.
The show, put on by the music publication Billboard, is also unveiling five new categories this year, based around global charts or virality on social media platforms.
The brand-new top viral song award category will honor some of the songs that made it big on TikTok, including “Kiss Me More” by Doja Cat featuring SZA, “abcdefu” by Gayle, “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals, “Astronaut in The Ocean” by Masked Wolf and “Fancy Like” by Walker Hayes.
So, who is nominated for a 2022 Billboard Music Award — including in these new categories? We'll go over a few of the finalists, before heading into the nominations list.
These are a few of the leading finalists at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards
The Weeknd leads among the finalists, nominated in 17 categories, including top artist, top male artist, top Hot 100 artist and top streaming songs artist. He’s also nominated in Billboard’s new category, top Billboard global 200 artist.
With 14 nominations, Doja Cat could soon place a Billboard Music Award next to her Grammy.
Justin Bieber is the third-most decorated artist in BBMA history, and with 13 nominations, he may be adding to his 21 wins. His song "Peaches," which he performed at the Grammys, got a nod.
Olivia Rodrigo, who took home three Grammys last weekend — and dropped and broke one of them — is a finalist in 13 categories, including top artist, top new artist, top female artist and top Billboard 200 album for “SOUR.”
Drake, the most decorated artist in BBMA history, is an 11-time finalist this year in categories like top artist, top male artist, top rap artist, top Billboard 200 artist and top Hot 100 artist.
Ye’s album “Donda" will compete alongside Drake's "Certified Lover Boy” for top rap album. “Donda” is also up for top gospel album and top Christian album.
Taylor Swift won big in the country categories in the early 2010s before switching to more nominations in pop categories. Following the re-release of her albums "Fearless" and "Red," her presence is felt in the country categories. Swift has 25 previous wins, making her the second most decorated artist and most decorated female artist at the Billboard awards.
Other notable finalists include Dua Lipa; Ed Sheeran; BTS, who is up for top group or duo this year; GIVĒON; and Dua Lipa.
