Coach’s comments:

“While we graduated only a small group of seniors from last year’s 7-3 team, that small group had players that made huge contributions to our team for multiple years, including six players that were multiple year starters.  We feel that our defense is ahead of our offense at the moment, due to returning eight starters on the defensive side. We also return seven starters offensively, however, we are still working to find the combination of offensive linemen.  We have a lot of returning role players from 2021 that are ready to step into an increased role. For 2022, our motto is “All In” and we expect our young men to step up and fill the void left by those who have graduated and seize the opportunities they will have.

“We return eight starters on defense, including a four-year starter in defensive lineman Kale Kochman. We return two out of three starters in our defensive backfield but we have some others that lettered last year that are ready to step up and be a contributor. We return two of our inside linebackers from a year ago and two of our defensive lineman. We believe we have some newcomers that will help fill the void left by graduation. We also return most of our skill on offense, led by Sam Carter, a three-year starter at quarterback.

“We also return several players that earned valuable playing time a year ago including; Gavin Henry, Brogan Burcher, Remmington Myers, and Kolton Thomas. We have many returning starters and several others that received playing time due to injury.  Another strength I feel we have is our depth.  We have great numbers again this year and a number of juniors who are competing for time.  This has made practices competitive and we feel we have a number of kids who can contribute on Friday nights.”

Coach’s comments:

"We are a young team with only two seniors, but we do have experience returning. We have 11 guys that at least started one game last year. Our young guys want to carry on that Malvern tradition and create their own legacy. Even though we are young, we really like the team we have. We have a lot of young talent and we know that we are going to get better and better as this season progresses.”

“We feel like we have a very good offensive line in place anchored by McClelland, Babiczuk and Bossert. Those three are very good and will be surrounded by Chance Miller and Conner Chalmers.”

“We’re still near 30 numbers wise and with only two seniors, we’re pretty happy with that. We’ll be able to play a full JV season and for our freshman and sophomores that is huge.”

"We’ll have a new QB in sophomore Jared Witherow. Jared is a very smart kid with a huge arm. Even though he’s just a sophomore I think he can have a very good year for us. We’re really excited about his potential.”

"We have three good wide receivers around him in Dylan Phillips, Rodney Smith and KJ Wafler. We’re really going to try and get as much out of Dylan as possible. He’s a very good athlete.”

"We have quite a few guys that will get carries in the backfield: Drake Hutchison, Dylan Phillips, Ryan Runyon, Charles Motz and Darnell Jackson.”

"Defensively, we believe we will have a sound unit. We think we have a very good secondary and we’ll rely on our front seven a lot early in the season to stop that run.”

"We have a very good kicker in junior Ryan Runyon."

"Even though we are young and inexperienced for the most part, we really like the team we have. They are a fun group of guys to be around and they always come ready to work. We want to focus on getting better and better each day as the season goes on. We feel like we have a team that can win a lot of football games, but we have to develop and most importantly we have to stay healthy.”

"We expect to win and contend for another IVC Championship. Even though we are young, our guys still expect this. A lot of them had minor roles the last two years and now they believe it’s their time. I expect the IVC North to be wide open this year. It seemed like every team had a big senior class. It’s going to be a fun year.”

Coach’s comments:

“We have 13 returning Lettermen and only 2 Seniors. We have 7 starters back on offense & 6 starters back on defense from last year’s team. We only have 2 seniors on our roster of 42 guys. The smallest class in my 14 years at Sandy Valley. We have many returning starters back on both sides of the football, they started last year as sophomores & frreshmen. Age is just a number.”

“Each year, every team is different. We are excited for the playmakers we have back on both sides of the football. We are starting to see that the experience we gained from last year really pay off so far in every aspect. Our players have made tremendous gains in our off-season weight program & on the field at this point. I feel I have one of the best coaching staffs around surrounded by Hall of Fame coaches and they have done a tremendous job every day we step on the field. We are competing at every drill in our practices and learning how to practice the right way at a rapid rate and that’s due to our players buying in and believing in their abilities while our coaching staff has been getting the job done on a daily basis. We have elevated our expectations by setting lofty goals. We are excited to lead off Stark County Football and look forward to the opportunity to play Week 1 against Fairless on a Thursday Night in Magnolia, Ohio.”

“The IVC South has a ton of talent returning with every team. Every Friday night in the IVC & in our Non-conference games will be a dog fight night in and night out. We have put together the toughest schedule since I have been at SV with our Non-Conference games with Fairless, Manchester, Canton South & Minerva. We are not looking ahead or taking any opponent lightly. Our ultimate goal is to “Ring the Bell” and come out with a victory by getting better each and every day. Our Team has goals set in place and we are trying the “WIN THE DAY” by getting better every day. We have a really tough schedule, and we welcome the competition. Every team in the IVC is well coached and this league is now one of the more competitive leagues around.”

Coach’s comments:

“We look forward to the 2022 season with a large senior class and a strong group of juniors who have gained invaluable experience through the last 2 years.  The key to moving forward is the progress of our offensive line who have been working hard all summer to improve.  With returning letterman Brad Lab, Logan Postlethwait, Mason Ohler and Dylan Congdon up front we look for  improvement in both the running game and passing game.  We also return our QB, Cole Clements, Beau Wolf, John Leffler, Ben Brideweser, Drew Congdon and Logan McKinney to the skill positions on offense. We have seen improvement through the summer and hope that continues to finish out the pre-season. Also, we have a strong group of newcomers that we hope to see gain experience and improve as the season progresses.

“Defensively we return all of the above players to a group of younger players working to fill in the gaps.  We look to rally to the football and play fast all things which we have seen improve over the past 2 weeks of camp.  We look to continue to improve and see a strong defense for the 2022 season.”

FAIRLESS

Head coach: AJ Sarbaugh, 5th year, 23-18.

Last year’s record/finish:: 9-2, 6-1 and PAC champs.

Postseason: Division V, Region 17

Returning lettermen: Logan Berresford, OL/DL, 6-1, 225, sr.; Xavier Collier, OL/DL, 6-3, 280, jr.; Carson Colucci, QB/DB, 6-2, 165, jr.; Gavin Conley, WR/LB, 6-0, 170, sr.; Dominic Ehmer, OL/DL, 5-9, 205, sr.; Tom Fox, OL/DL, 6-2, 240, sr.; Andy Gill, WR/DB, 5-11, 165, jr.; Allen Harrison, WR/DB, 5-11, 155, jr.; Peter Killy, RB/DB, 5-11, 175, soph.; Owen Kornish, OL/DL, 6-0, 300, soph; Garrett Miller, OL/LB, 5-10, 190, sr.; Brandon Pumneo, WR/DB, 6-0, 150, sr.; Brody Pumneo, WR/DB, 6-1, 160, sr.; Landyn Seal, TE/DB, 5-10, 185, sr.; Joe Sparren, OL/DL, 6-2, 225, sr.; Anthony Stutler, RB/DB, 5-11, 155, soph.; Jackson Stutz, OL/DL, 5-10, 175, sr.; Luke Yoder, WR/DB, 6-0, 165, sr.

Impact players: A breakthrough sophomore season from QB Carson Colucci put Fairless on track for a historic 2021 run. He completed 63% of his passes for 1,771 yards and 22 touchdowns. Colucci is the younger brother of former Fairless quarterback Hunter Wells, who held the Stark County career passing yards record until 2020. ... Brody Pumneo and Luke Yoder are All-Ohio receivers who are tough to track down. Pumneo led the Falcons with 48 catches for 792 yards and 10 TDs last season. He and Yoder were All-Ohio runners in track last spring. ... Tom Fox and Joe Sparren are returning two-way linemen. Garrett Miller also returns on the offensive line and at linebacker.

What's new: The graduation of Hunter Campbell leaves Fairless with big shoes to fill at running back. Peter Killy will get his shot. Anthony Stutler will receive some reps and also play defensive back.

Outlook: After ending a 42-year league championship drought, the Falcons have a shot to win back-to-back PAC-7 titles. The offense returns many skill players and linemen who helped Fairless average almost 33 points a game. The defense also has many of its best players back. A first-round playoff loss to Poland ended the Falcons' historic run and left head coach AJ Sarbaugh's players aiming even higher. They have their sights set on winning a home playoff game for the first time and stringing three straight winning seasons together for the second time in program history. The only other time Fairless had three straight winning seasons was 1978, 1979 and 1980. Fairless is back in Division V, Region 17 after being in Division IV, Region 13 the previous three seasons.
