The 2022 Indianapolis 500 brings the real possibility for record-breaking performances, whether it be for all-time victories, youngest winner or team champion.

Eight drivers who previously won the race are in the field, while seven are taking on the race for the first time. Thirteen American drivers and 20 international competitors are in the field. Scott Dixon won the pole position.

Indy 500 engines: Honda vs. Chevrolet

Honda engines will power 17 Indy 500 starters in 2022, and Chevrolet will power 16. Average starting position is 12.8 for Honda-powered cars and 17.8 for Chevys.

Eight former race winners are on the 2021 Indy 500 starting grid: Scott Dixon (2008, starting 1st); Tony Kanaan (2013, starting 6th); Takuma Sato (2017, '20, starting 10th); Will Power (2018, starting 11th); Simon Pagenaud (2019, starting 16th); Alexander Rossi (2016, starting 20th); Helio Castroneves (2001, '02, '09, '21 starting 27th), and Juan Pablo Montoya (2000, '15, starting 30th). The average starting positions for race winners is 15.1.

Indy 500 rookies

Seven first-timers are in the 2022 Indy 500: Romain Grosjean (starting 9th), Jimmie Johnson (12th), David Malukas (13th), Callum Ilott (19th), Devlin DeFrancesco (24th), Kyle Kirkwood (28th) and Christian Lundgaard (31st). The average rookie starting position is 19.4.

Youngest Indy 500 winner

Troy Ruttman was 22 years, 80 days old when he won in 1952. Three drivers have a chance to eclipse that mark: David Malukas is 20 years old, and Rinus VeeKay and Christian Lundgaard are 21.

Oldest Indy 500 winner

A.J. Foyt and Al Unser were each 47 years old when they earned their fourth Indy 500 victory. Helio Castroneves became a four-time winner last year at age 46, though this year he remains younger than Foyt and Unser at the time of their fourth Indy 500 wins. Tony Kanaan is also 47. Other 40-plus starters include Juan Pablo Montoya (46), Takuma Sato (45), Scott Dixon (41), Will Power (41) and Ed Carpenter (41).

Who has won the most Indy 500 races

Helio Castroneves is seeking a record fifth Indy 500 victory in 2022. He won the race in 2001, '02, '09 and '21. Also with four: A.J. Foyt (won in 1961, '64, '67 and '77), Al Unser (1970, '71, '78 and '87) and Rick Mears (1979, '84, '88 and '91).

Andretti Autosport (and its earlier iteration, Andretti Green Racing) has won 5 times: Dan Wheldon (2005), Dario Franchitti ('07), Ryan Hunter-Reay ('14), Alexander Rossi ('16) and Takuma Sato ('17).

Chip Ganassi Racing has won 4 times: Montoya (2000), Scott Dixon ('08), Franchitti ('10, '12).
