In 2022, some longtime favorite Jacksonville restaurants have closed. Here's a list.

In 2021, it was The Wine Cellar, River City Brewing Co., Mediterrania Restaurant.

In 2022, more Jacksonville-area restaurants are following suit, calling it quits after 10, 20 or even 30 years or more.

It's all part of the natural cycle of the business: People retire, new opportunities arise, business slows.

Even as effects of the pandemic linger, including labor shortages, supply chain issues and now, inflation, dozens of new restaurants are in the works all across Jacksonville.

Still, it can be hard to say goodbye to old favorites.

Here's a look at some of the notable restaurant closings of 2022.

From Arden's to Wine Cellar to Zodiac: These Jacksonville-area restaurants closed in 2021

A popular destination for dinner and celebrations for 15 years, Blackstone Grille closed after Father's Day dinner service on June 19. Chef Charles Wang, an award-winning chef with more than 30 years of experience, and his wife, Helen Chang, opened the restaurant in 2007, offering innovative interpretations of American cuisine plus the "best of flavors and tastes from a variety of cultures and influences" creating a taste best described as Modern American Fusion.

A fixture on Julington Creek since 1974, Clark's Fish Camp was listed for sale in October after temporarily closing a month earlier. The storied fish camp was known for its steak and seafood entrees, including Mayport peel-and-eat shrimp, clams, snow crab, oysters and more as well as a number of selections you won’t find on many menus in Jacksonville: frog legs, gator ribs, snake, kangaroo, turtle and “Bison Mountain Oysters.” For others, it was best known for what it says is the “largest public taxidermy collection in the United States” of big cats, small game and more. The decision to sell followed a series of flooding events in recent years as well the effects of the pandemic that left the restaurant "literally and figuratively underwater," its manager said.

In addition to pizza, The Loop Pizza Grill is known for its burgers, salads and milkshakes.

In early November, The Loop closed at the Town Center after company officials chose not to renew its lease. When it opened in December 2012, the restaurant served as a prototype for the Jacksonville-based chain's future, featuring a new design for the fast-casual restaurant founded in 1981. A decade later, the restaurant no longer fit into The Loop's future plans, the company's chief marketing official told the Times-Union. "We have decided to concentrate on other areas that are better suited for our concept moving forward." And that includes a new location coming in the first quarter of 2023. (Stay tuned.) After the closing, The Loop still has 10 locations in Northeast Florida and another five in North Carolina.

After 12 years of “love, laughter, blood, sweat and many tears,” Simply Sara’s closed in July. Located in the heart of Ortega, the restaurant was known for its scratch-made authentic, Southern-style menu using closely-held, decades-old family recipes. Owners James and Sally Mangham first opened Simply Sara’s in 2011 in a small storefront in a nondescript retail strip in Murray Hill, offering takeout only. There, everything on the menu was made from scratch, including salad dressings, barbecue sauces, pimento cheese and tomato sauce. Within two years, the couple had moved to Ortega, where they were able to expand their concept, offering seating and adding menu items and staff.

After changing hands in recent years, Sorrento closed its doors for good in late August, ending its 35-year-run in the San Jose neighborhood.
