The 1,053, 977 ballots cast during last week’s Massachusetts State Primaries is the 2nd highest tally since 1990, Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin announced Tuesday.

According to Galvin’s office, only the 2020 State Primaries have had a higher turnout in the past 32 years. The 21.8 percent turnout rate among registered voters matched the turnout in the 2018 State Primaries.

Just over 50 percent of ballots were cast before Election Day, 45 percent through mail-in voting. It was only the second time the majority of ballots were cast before election day. In 2020, 60 percent of ballots were cast outside of Election Day polling places.

According to Galvin, 52 of Democratic Primary ballots were cast by mail as opposed to 27.4 percent for Republican Primary.
