2022 News-Herald boys soccer all-stars

Nov. 14—PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Aiden Ptacek

University, senior

Whether in the natural flow of attack with a silky touch and service sense, on set pieces or as an accountable on-pitch leader, few News-Herald coverage area players can impact a match in quite the way Ptacek can. In a sterling year for player of the year candidates that also featured strong consideration for Wickliffe's Colin Casey and South's Luka Pranjeta, the University standout senior attacker gets the nod as the 2022 News-Herald boys soccer player of the year. Ptacek had 21 goals and 17 assists for the district finalist Preppers, having a hand in nearly 57% of his side's scoring output against a daunting schedule. The US talisman was a first-team Division I All-Ohioan, his second straight All-Ohio honor, was first-team all-Cleveland and was chosen for the High School All-American Game in Florida in December. Ptacek graduates second all-time in program history for career goals and assists and will continue his career collegiately at Bowling Green.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Dominik Severino, Wickliffe

What a campaign it was for the senior-laden Blue Devils under Severino's tutelage, going 16-5 and making their first Division III regional semifinal appearance since Severino was a starter on the 2006 D-III state runner-up side. That marked a nine-win improvement year-over-year and featured solid wins over Kirtland, Independence and Berkshire before a district run with quality results over Columbiana Crestview and Badger and staying within striking distance of Cardinal Mooney for an hour in the sweet 16. Severino is an adept tactician and strong steward for his alma mater.
