With 12 picks in the three-day NFL Draft that starts Thursday night, the Jacksonville Jaguars won't have a problem addressing their most glaring roster needs.

They need an edge rusher that can consistently get pressure on the quarterback and it appears the Jaguars are deciding between Michigan's Aidan Hutchinson and Georgia's Travon Walker for the No. 1 overall pick.

If you believe the Las Vegas oddsmakers, Walker is the betting favorite to selected by the Jaguars as the No. 1 pick. Going into Monday, Walker was a -150 favorite to be the No. 1 pick on DraftKings Sportsbook, ahead of Hutchinson.

Yet, a majority of the draft experts have the Jaguars selecting Hutchinson, considered a safe pick, because he is rated as the top player in the 2022 draft class.

But nothing is predictable about a draft until the selections are made.

Jaguars need players who can contribute immediately

Walker's draft stock has continued to soar since putting forth a strong performance at the NFL Combine that included running the 40-yard dash in 4.51 seconds — the 10th fastest time in combine history for defensive ends.

Walker had six sacks and a team-high 32 quarterback pressures last season in his only full season as a starter.

Asked how a versatile draft prospect like Walker fits in the NFL, Jaguars GM Trent Baalke said, "Well, that's the fun part is listening to the coaches because every scheme is a little bit different. So, where does that guy fit in our scheme versus where he might fit in another scheme? That's talked about a lot, and you leave that up to the coaches."

Beyond the first overall pick, the Jaguars' draft wish list includes landing a running back, inside linebacker and offensive guard — all capable of contributing immediately.

A month ago, the Jaguars made a big splash in free agency, signing eight players, including wide receiver Christian Kirk, to contracts totaling $162.5 million in guaranteed money.

Rebuilding through draft is a critical step

Rebuilding through the draft for the Jaguars is a critical step to repair a roster that produced just four wins over the past two seasons.

The decisions Baalke and coach Doug Pederson make, starting with the No. 1 overall pick on Thursday night, will largely determine the long-term path ahead for the franchise.

"Whether you're picking first overall, or in our case a couple of years [in Philadelphia] ago second overall, we moved ourselves up in the draft to do that. There will be guys that are going to get in the mix right away," Pederson said. "The players we eventually draft are going to be ours, they're going to be Jaguars, and we're going to welcome them in, and they're going to fit into any room that we select a player at."

Besides acquiring an edge rusher, the Jaguars also need another big-play wide receiver, offensive guard and improve their defensive depth, especially at linebacker with the departures of veterans Myles Jack and Damien Wilson.

The Jaguars also could need a left tackle after this upcoming season if Cam Robinson does not reach a long-term agreement with the Jaguars by July 15.

Robinson is signed under the $16.6 million franchise tender for this upcoming season.

Still, if no extension deal is reached, he will become a free agent in 2023 because the Jaguars cannot extend a franchise tender for a third consecutive season.

There has been speculation the Jaguars are strongly considering both Alabama left tackle Evan Neal and North Carolina State's Ikem Ekwonu for the No. 1 overall pick.

"We've got guys ... we feel can step in and start immediately versus guys that maybe are going to take a little bit of time, whether that's a half a year, or a year," Baalke said. "You'd like to think that you can get out of the first couple picks for sure with guys

that are going to step on the field and play and play a significant role, and then from there, it depends on the board."

After third round, Jaguars have eight picks

Although Baalke said they have not received much interest from teams willing to move up to the No. 1 spot, the Jaguars could explore trade options in the mid-to-late rounds of the draft to be obtain a targeted player on their draft board.

After the third round, the Jaguars have eight picks, including four in the sixth round. It could be in the mid-to-late rounds where the Jaguars could address their need for a tight end, additional offensive line help and improve their depth at defensive tackle.

"It’s nice to have day three picks. You can either use them to move up, you can package them to turn them into one pick if you want to chase a player up the board," Baalke said. "My history’s usually to trade back, not up, but we’re certainly going to look at anything we can relative to making this team better. If we need to move up to secure someone,

we have the ammunition to do that."
