WEDNESDAY’S RESULTS

CLASS A DIVISION II CHAMPIONSHIP

BENJAMIN 68, LORAINE 20

The Benjamin Mustangs were in a familiar position as huge favorites entering the Class 1A Division II state championship game against Loraine at AT&T Stadium.

It’s a position Benjamin has grown accustomed to this season following a preseason No. 1 ranking. On Wednesday, the Mustangs (14-0) left no doubt they were the best team in Class 1A DII with a 68-20 thumping of Loraine (13-2) to secure Benjamin’s first state football championship in school history. The game ended with 6:16 left in the third quarter.

The Mustangs’ offense scored on all nine of its possessions in the contest, led by Offensive Player of the Game Grayson Rigdon. The sensational sophomore rushed for 255 yards and five touchdowns on 10 carries. He also completed both of his passes for 88 yards and two scores.

Rigdon spurred the Mustangs to victory when he forced a fumble, and teammate Brody White scooped and returned it for a touchdown with 10 seconds before halftime.

Nicholas Stovall was the Defensive Player of the Game, finishing with 11 tackles and a sack. Loraine scored on three of its first four possessions but didn’t register a point after the 9:31 mark of the second quarter.

The game ended via the 45-point mercy rule with 9:02 left in the fourth quarter.

Ware rushed for 142 yards and four TDs and also caught a 34-yard TD pass. Grayson Jeffrey complemented Ware with 138 rushing and two scores, catching two passes for 43 yards and a TD and completing his lone pass attempt for a 29-yard TD to Colton Walters.

CLASS 2A DIVISION II CHAMPIONSHIP

ALBANY 41, MART 21

After 37 years, Denney Faith can finally say he’s a state championship winning coach.

Albany used a physical brand of football to punish Mart for four quarters, pulling away late in the first half for a 41-21 victory at AT&T Stadium.

Faith stands alone on the all-time wins list by Texas high school football head coaches and captures that elusive first state title. It’s Albany’s third state championship but first since 1961.

Albany and Mart traded touchdowns until the Lions scored two consecutive to end the first half, taking a 28-14 advantage into the locker room. Adam Hill’s 27-yard TD run with 47 seconds left in the second quarter was particularly important because Mart made the mistake during the coin toss of choosing to kickoff to Albany to start each half.

The Lions extended their lead to 34-14 on a 3-yard TD by Coy Lefevre with 8:59 left in the third, and Mart never challenged to pull even.

Lefevre was the Offensive Player of the GAme, rushing for 65 yards and four TDs. The Lions finished with 311 rushing yards, including 129 by quarterback Cole Chapman and 105 from Hill, who added 71 receiving yards.

Wyatt Windham was Defensive Player of the Game, leading Albany with 17 tackles, including one for loss.
