The Best New Artist winner at this year’s Grammy Awards will open a truncated Burlington Discover Jazz Festival, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in June.

Samara Joy, who won Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album at the Grammys on Feb. 5, will open the festival on Wednesday, June 7, at the Flynn. The festival has run over a 10-day span for much of its history, but will only cover half that length this year.

For the second consecutive year, the festival has a guest musical curator overseeing the lineup of performers. This year’s curator is Lakecia Benjamin, a rising saxophone player who gave an electrifying performance at Waterfront Park with her group Soul Squad last June 10 prior to the show by headliners George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic.

Benjamin and her latest project, Phoenix, will open Joy’s show. Last year’s festival curator was musician Michael Mwenso.

Myra Flynn, vocalist and pianist, will perform closing day

The festival also announced Tuesday that Vermont-raised vocalist/pianist Myra Flynn will headline a show at the venue that shares her name. Her closing-day matinee concert Sunday, June 11, called “The Roar of the Queen,” will feature the Lake Champlain Mass Choir and other guests who will help Flynn celebrate the upcoming release of her latest album.
