2023 Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Animated Program

The nomination round of voting takes place from June 15 to June 26, with the official Emmy nominations announced Wednesday, July 12. Afterward, final voting commences August 17 and ends the night of August 28. The 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards will now take place Monday, January 15, live on Fox at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.

The State of the Race

Regardless of how many seasons “The Simpson” has been on for, winning an Emmy like Outstanding Animated Program 11 times is extremely impressive, and very indicative of why the Fox mainstay’s awards chances should never be discounted. Its last win was as recent as 2019, and that was before all the changes happened that have brought on the new, positive reappraisals that have elevated its likelihood to win this year’s Emmy.

But one can’t imagine that Netflix would concede after making history last year as the first streaming platform to win this category, with video game adaptation “Arcane: League of Legends.” Their nominee this year, “Entergalactic,” is an even more unconventional choice, described as a TV event rather than a series or movie. That, plus the momentum from last year, could propel the Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi and Kenya Barris-created Netflix project toward another Emmy win, but voters would have to be of a mindset of wanting to break tradition.

The wild card in all this is “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal” from Adult Swim, back with Season 2 after winning this Emmy category in 2021. Reception for the sophomore effort was a bit quieter, leading some to believe voters could have moved past Adult Swim altogether. Not only did it get a nomination though, its fellow Emmy-winning Adult Swim series “Rick and Morty” also made it in despite controversy surrounding the co-creator earlier this year.

Interestingly, the TV awards season started with nominee “Bob’s Burgers” winning the corresponding 2023 Annie Award, often a bellwether for this race, which provides for a fascinating example of how things change over the course of voting, and how all of the nominees listed below have a fighting chance.

Hot Streak: Last year, Netflix became the first streaming service to ever win this category. It has ample chance to keep the streak going this year, even with “Arcane: League of Legends” out of contention, but 2021 winner “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal” could also build a streak with an Emmy for Season 2.
