The 2023 All-Herald offense: Meet the top high school players in the tri-county area

The Herald’s 2023 all-star offensive teams are headlined by two Shrine Bowlers, four North/South nominees and a pair of 2,000-yard rushers.

Players were nominated by their own coaches or other coaches.

Along with the nominations are relevant stats and other information sent in by coaches or pulled from MaxPreps.

Here are the All-Herald teams, with stats and. highlights provided by coaches and MaxPreps.

First-team offense

QB Finley Polk, Northwestern, 6-2, 187, JR.

2022 stats: 2,902 yards passing, 38 TDs, 7 INTs; 179 yards rushing, 8 TDs

In his second year as starting quarterback for Northwestern, Polk put together an impressive campaign, leading the Trojans to an 11-2 record and a third-round playoff appearance.

RB Landon Stone, Clover, 6-0, 185, JR.

2022 stats: 2,254 yards rushing, 21 TDs

In his first year as the primary ball carrier for the Blue Eagles, Stone eclipsed 2,000 yards in helping Clover to its first undefeated region title since 2019.

RB Trey Thompson, Andrew Jackson, 5-11, 215, SR.

2022 stats: 2,107 yards rushing, 24 TDs; 51 tackles

Thompson recorded his second consecutive 2,000-yard rushing season en route to becoming Andrew Jackson’s career leader in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns. Thompson was a North/South game nominee.

WR Hayden Morris, Indian Land, 6-2, 190, SO.

2022 stats: 850 yards receiving, 10 TDs

Morris followed up a good freshman year with a better sophomore one, picking up his second all-region selection and first all-state selection in his career in helping Indian Land clinch a playoff berth.

WR De’Adrian Robinson, Lewisville, 5-11, 160, JR.

2022 stats: 746 yards receiving, 11 TDs

Robinson led Lewisville with 11 receiving touchdowns as the Lions clinched their second straight regional title.

TE Brady Ambrose, Catawba Ridge, 6-4, 235, JR.

2022 stats: 238 yards receiving, 1 TD, 17 pancake blocks

Ambrose had a solid season, earning an all-region selection and an all-state honorable mention.

OL Victor Goree, South Pointe, 6-1, 260, JR.

2022 stats: 21 knockdowns, graded out at 91% for the season

Serving primarily as an interior offensive linemen, Goree helped the Stallion offense gain over 4,000 yards of total offense this season.

OL Hunter Layne, York, 6-2, 313, SR.

2022 stats: Graded out at 88% with 24 knockdown blocks

Layne was the fulcrum for the Cougars’ offensive line, playing every snap at center this season. Layne’s play earned him all-region honors.

OL Jake Recker, Indian Land, 6-4, 285, SR.

2022 stats: Graded out at 94% for the season

Recker earned all-region honors this year and was a North/South game nominee.

OL Trey Rodriguez, Indian Land, 6-2, 280, SR.

2022 stats: Graded out at 95% for the season with 45 knockdowns

Rodriguez helped solidify a talented Indian Land offensive line, not allowing a sack all season.

OL Vance Ventry, Northwestern, 6-6, 272, SR.

2022 stats: Graded out at 90% with 21 knockdown blocks

In charge of protecting Finley Polk’s blind side, Ventry put up an excellent campaign, allowing zero sacks after Northwestern’s first game of the season en route to an all-state selection and a North/South nomination.

AP Ayden Davis, York, 6-1, 192, SR.

2022 stats: 1,574 all-purpose yards, 20 total TDs

Davis played a bit of everything this season: quarterback, running back, wide receiver and returner. He finished second on the team in rushing while leading in receiving and return yardage and will leave York as its career touchdowns leader.

RB: Turbo Richard, Northwestern, 5-8, 206, SR. (Shrine Bowl nominee)

RB: Elijah Coleman, Chester, 5-9, 210, SR. (North/South nominee)

WR: Malik Clark, Rock Hill, 6-3, 180, JR.

WR: Jaylen Burris, Northwestern, 6-3, 183, SR.

TE: Hayden Williams, Andrew Jackson, 6-2, 222, SR.

OL: Anthony Baxter, South Pointe, 6-3, 320, SO.

OL: Brooks Horton, Andrew Jackson, 6-7, 337, SR.

OL: AJ Minder, Clover, 6-2, 285, SR.

OL: Ethan Shipman, Lewisville, 6-3, 256, JR.
