2023 Milwaukee area plant sales begin with pre-orders, and focus on native perennials
Garden clubs and community groups want to encourage you to spruce up your yards and support the insect pollinators, birds and small mammals in your backyards with the purchase of flowers and plants. In-person sales are held throughout May and into June, but some plants may be available only by pre-ordering in April, so check with each organization if pre-purchase is required.
Here is a list of area plant sales:
Wauwatosa Woman’s Club
The annual spring plant sale runs through May 5 with spring flowers available for pickup from noon to 1 p.m. or 5 to 6 p.m. May 11. The fundraiser benefits the club and Heyden’s Greenhouse. Prices range from $20 to $40 and feature 10 inch and 12 inch hanging baskets, flats or planters of geraniums, sun annuals, ageratum, impatiens and more. Richfield Historical Society
Purchase gift certificates that can be used for any plants and/or plant supplies at Nehm’s Greenhouse, 3639 Highway 175, Slinger. Gift certificates for the annual plant sale are available in $15 and $25 amounts, and orders will be taken until May 1. Every purchase helps preserve the historic buildings in Richfield Historical Park and with other RHS projects. Richfield Historical Park, 1896 Highway 164, Richfield. Pewaukee River Partnership
The native plant sale is pre-order only with pickup from 4 to 6 p.m. May 12, and 9 a.m. to noon May 13. Order deadline is April 22. Plants are sold in 2.5-inch pots and are priced at $2.75 per plant; special order plants are available at $3.25 each. Pickup is in the village parking lot, next to Noah’s Pizza, 220 Oakton Ave., Pewaukee. Fox Point Garden Club
May market plant sale, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. May 13. Purchase perennial flowers from member gardens. Longacre Pavilion, corner of Longacre and Belle Road, Fox Point.
Milwaukee River Advocates
The Riverwest environmental cooperative will hold its native plant sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 13 and 14 at 3278 N. Humboldt Blvd. Gardeners may purchase plants in person, or pre-order plants to pick up on the sale days. Receive a 5% discount when you pre-order by April 11, otherwise all pre-orders must be received by April 19. Pre-order is recommended since a limited assortment of plants are available the day of the sale. Monarch Trail
Plant sale, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 13 and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 14. Pre-order collections, special bags and flats ahead of time online with pickup during the plant sale. Herb Society Wisconsin Unit
Herb and Artisan Fair, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 20. The fair features herbs and other plants for sale, with two educational sessions scheduled for the morning. Learn about "Alice’s Garden Urban Farm" with Venice Williams, and "High Tea in the Garden" with Jane Hawley Stevens. Shop for baked goods, with artisan vendors selling herbal and gardening items, ceramics, garden art and Herbal Ladies Heirlooms. Fair entry, parking and the herb talks are free. Horicon Marsh

Daylily sale, 7:30 a.m.-noon June 3. Held at the Brookfield Farmers Market at Brookfield Central High School, 16900 W. Gebhardt Road, Brookfield. The society will have 240 varieties of daylilies at the sale, with prices ranging from $7 to $30. The daylilies are hardy plants that have overwintered in a club garden in Wisconsin. Elm Grove Beautification Committee
Annual plant sale, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. June 3. Sale features only locally grown native plants and herbs, with seven herbs, five native grasses and 57 varieties of native perennials available for purchase.
