The first movie announced for the 2023 Milwaukee Film Festival is a blast from the past on two levels.

Milwaukee Film, the nonprofit group that runs the film festival, said Tuesday that the 15th annual festival will include a screening of the 1927 silent sci-fi masterpiece "Metropolis," with live-music accompaniment by the Anvil Orchestra.

The Anvil Orchestra's members include several alums of the Alloy Orchestra, which played the Milwaukee Film Festival multiple times in the 2010s.

The movie, inspired by director Fritz Lang's first view of the New York City skyline during a visit in the 1920s, ranks among the most influential films of all time, and the most lauded. (It was ranked No. 67 on the 2022 edition of Sight & Sound critics' poll of best movies of all time.)

The screening at the 2023 Milwaukee Film Festival revives a tradition at the festival. In the years before the pandemic ruined everything, a screening of a silent-era classic accompanied by live music was a centerpiece event of the festival — and often sold out. There hasn't been one at the festival since 2019.

And bonus: "Metropolis" came out the same year the Oriental Theatre, the home base for the Milwaukee Film Festival, first opened its doors.

The 2023 edition of the Milwaukee Film Festival runs from April 20 to May 4. More details of the lineup are expected to trickle out in the coming weeks. Six-pack ticket packages ($78, $63 for Milwaukee Film members), 10-packs ($125 and $100) and all-access passes ($550 and $450) are available now at the Milwaukee Film website (mkefilm.org). According to Milwaukee Film, those prices will increase March 1.
