Baseball is back. Well, late-night baseball, for those in Northeast Ohio.

The Guardians open the 2023 season at 10:10 p.m. Thursday in Seattle against the Mariners. It's a matchup of two clubs that made somewhat surprising trips to the postseason in 2022. For the Mariners, it was the first time they punched their ticket to the playoffs since 2001.

But both teams ended up wanting more. The Guardians were ousted by the New York Yankees in Game 5 of the American League Division Series. The Mariners were swept in their first matchup against the Houston Astros, meaning the franchise still hasn't won a playoff game in more than 20 years.

This is the way: The Guardians know their brand of baseball can be demanding — and they're fine with that

The Guardians have already made plenty of news this week. All-Star second baseman Andres Gimenez and reliever Trevor Stephan were both signed to long-term contract extensions. The starting rotation will also be without Triston McKenzie for potentially the first two months of the regular season after he went down with a teres major muscle strain in his shoulder.

How the Central is won or lost: The top 3 factors to determine whether Cleveland Guardians win or lose AL Central in 2023

Check back throughout the night for live updates.

Top 9th: The Guardians brought the potential tying run to the plate in the form of Josh Bell, but he grounded out to end it. The Mariners win 3-0.

Ty France hits 3-run home run to put Mariners up 3-0

Bottom 8th: The scoreless tie has been broken in a big way. After Karinchak's inning unraveled following the pitch clock penalty, Ty France hit a three-run home run that just cleared the right-field wall. The big question tonight, and one that everyone knew was coming, is how the pitch clock might alter a pitcher's mindset on the mound.

James Karinchak is the first Guardians pitcher to be penalized by MLB's new rules

Bottom 8th: James Karinchak had J.P. Crawford down 0-2 but was then penalized for not getting into his delivery fast enough, and Crawford was awarded a ball. Karinchak later walked him, though replays showed Crawford's bat clearly hit the pitch that was called ball four, and he then hit Kolten Wong to put two runners on with one out.

Bottom 7th: Shane Bieber's night is done. He allowed six hits and struck out three on 87 pitches. The Guardians are turning to Trevor Stephan, who just signed a long-term contract extension this week.

Top 7th: Mariners reliever Matt Brash, who entered the game for Luis Castillo to begin the top of the 7th, just did something not many pitchers have in the past: make Jose Ramirez look silly. Ramirez struck out and on that swing looked more like a corkscrew and fell over the plate.

Shane Bieber, Luis Castillo both with five scoreless innings as Guardians, Mariners remain tied

Bottom 5th: The Guardians are opening the season with an expected pitchers duel. Bieber so far: five hits allowed, three strikeouts, 69 pitches. Castillo to this point: one hit allowed, five strikeouts, 66 pitches. Both teams are scoreless. At some point, they'll need to score a run this season.

Bieber hasn't exactly been as sharp, but he's been able to pitch his way out of some trouble thus far.

Guardians getting first taste of new rules in regular season game

Bottom 3rd: This one's still scoreless. It's also the first game that matters with the new rules, namely the pitch clock that will have an impact on both the pitchers' and batters' pace. The idea is to get rid of many of the slower moments of the game. It did speed up games considerably during the spring. The first three innings tonight took 45 minutes. For those watching on Bally Sports, that's the counter at the bottom of the screen.

Top 3rd: The first hit of the 2023 Guardians season is an infield single off the bat of Will Brennan that hit off of Luis Castillo. Castillo is fine and remaining in the game.

Bottom 1st: Shane Bieber opened the 2023 season with a two-strikeout inning in which he gave up a hit. Luis Castillo put the Guardians away 1-2-3 in the top half of the inning.

Who are the Opening Day starters for Guardians vs. Mariners?

Shane Bieber starts his fourth straight Opening Day for the Guardians when he takes the mound Thursday night. The Mariners will start two-time All-Star Luis Castillo, entering his first full season with Seattle after being acquired via trade from the Cincinnati Reds last season. He went 8-6 with 167 strikeouts and 2.99 ERA in 150.1 innings last season. Bieber, the 2020 Cy Young Award winner, went 13-8 with 198 strikeouts and a 2.88 ERA in 200 innings last year.
