2023 News-Herald boys swimming and diving all-stars

Mar. 6—SWIMMER OF THE YEAR

Krys Gorski

Andrews Osborne, junior

Gorski's ascent to being one of Ohio's premier performers in the pool has been as rapid as his work in meaningful postseason swims — and the perch on which the Andrews Osborne junior finds himself heading into his senior campaign is more than plenty to earn 2023 News-Herald boys swimmer of the year. The Ohio State recruit was Division II state runner-up in 200 freestyle (1:40.62) and 100 backstroke (48.87), giving two dynamic performers in Lucas Lane and Eli Stoll all they could handle as he secured silvers himself. These seconds are the highest finishes by a swimmer from a Lake County school all-time — Mentor's Rick Galbos had been listed in official results as having tied for second in 50 free in 1968, but the tie was later broken and he took third. In the modern "one-MVP" era for News-Herald all-stars since 2000, Gorski is the third AOA student-athlete in any sport to earn the top N-H honor, joining Jelena Lainovic (girls golf, 2018) and Andro Filipovic (boys soccer, 2019).

COACH OF THE YEAR

Matt Trem, Lake Catholic

We very well could be in the early stages of the best run Lake Catholic has ever enjoyed in boys swimming and diving, as Trem is doing laudable work building the program. With a freshman-heavy group this winter, Lake was as impactful as it's ever been in the postseason on the boys side in the sport, getting five individual-event and three relay qualifiers and a diver to the state meet. While in Canton, the Cougars' 200 and 400 free relays logged 'A' final swims in eighth — a deserved sendoff for longtime program staple J.D. DiCello and invaluable experience for the ninth-graders who will plot the course going forward.
