2023 primary results: Who won Broome DA, Vestal town supervisor ballot spots

Paul Battisti clinched the Republican nomination in the race for Broome County District Attorney with about a thousand votes over incumbent DA Michael Korchak Tuesday.

Battisti garnered about 55% of the vote with 4,820 ballots cast in his favor, and Korchak received just over 44% of the vote with 3,838.

Tuesday’s primary election results mirror those of four years ago, when Battisti again triumphed over Korchak. In the 2019 general election, however, Korchak ran as a Libertarian candidate and defeated Battisti by only a handful of votes.

“Today the Republican voters of Broome County decisively declared that they want a big change in leadership at the District Attorney’s Office so that our families are safe again,” Battisti said in a statement late Tuesday. “I’m truly humbled and honored to have earned this victory in today’s Primary Election, but there is much more work to do between now and November. Our General Election campaign starts right now, and we won’t stop until we deliver another big win on November 7.”

Korchak's campaign said Wednesday he does not intend to continue in the electoral race as a third-party candidate.

“As I stated throughout my campaign, a district attorney must have experience, integrity, and honesty. The District Attorney’s Office is not a place for politics," Korchak said in a statement Wednesday. “Today, my team and I have returned to work, representing the victims, their families and protecting our communities with the same zealousness and commitment that we have had since taking office. We will continue to do so until the end of my term.”
