Sara Bareilles and Brian D’Arcy James of “Into the Woods” fulfilled the wishes of many Broadway fans Sunday when they took the stage at United Palace to perform “It Takes Two” at the 2023 Tony Awards.

The first act duet between the Baker and The Baker’s Wife showcased to television audiences why Bareilles and James each earned Tony nominations this year for their performances in the Stephen Sondheim revival.

They were joined by puppeteer Kennedy Kanagawa, whose scene-stealing “portrayal” of Milky White, a gaunt cow that changes owners several times throughout the musical got plenty of laughed from the audience.

The original Broadway production of “Into the Woods” debuted on Broadway in 1987. Though it was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and took home three, including best score, it lost to “Phantom of the Opera” in the category of best musical.

The new production started as part of 2022′s New York City Center Encores! season before transferring to Broadway. Acclaimed by critics, “Into the Woods” was nominated for ten awards this year, including best revival of a musical.
