Toyota will add hybrid systems and all-wheel drive to its Corolla Cross subcompact SUV and Corolla sedan for sale later this year as 2023 models.

All the AWD models use an electrically powered axle to drive their rear wheels, an increasingly common method of adding the feature without the complexity, weight and cost of physically connecting the engine to the rear wheels.

Toyota won’t say how much power the AWD hybrid sedans will have, beyond being more than the FWD hybrid’s 121 hp. Corolla sedan hybrids also adopt a lithium-ion battery that saves space. Engineers moved it from the sedan’s trunk to under the rear seat. That improves cargo space and lowers the sedan’s center of gravity. Combined with AWD, the lower center of gravity should improve the handling.

Cloud-based infotainment, navigation

The Corolla Cross hybrid has a total of 194 horsepower, 37-mpg estimated combined city/highway fuel economy and a projected 0-60 mph time of 8.0 seconds. Toyota builds the Corolla Cross in a Huntsville, Alabama, plant it shares with Mazda.

Non-hybrid Corollas get a power boost to 169 hp, up from 139, and improved fuel economy, according to Toyota’s estimates. They remain front-wheel drive.

Visible changes include standard LED daytime running lights, LED headlights on some models.

New features include:

• Toyota’s cloud-based navigation and personal assistant

• Over-the-air update capability

• Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

• 800-watt JBL audio
