Office seeking: Ward 3 alderman

Are you an incumbent? No

Have you run for public office before? No

Occupation: Realtor

Education: Grambling State University

Highlight your civic involvement: Volunteered with Edwardsville Little Tigers Football Club and Edwardsville Wrestling Club and served on the LTF board.

Who are your top three campaign contributors? Myself and RPAC (REALTORS Political Action Committee)

Why are you running? About five years ago, I noticed that my neighborhood wasn’t as well-kept or as safe as the neighborhoods that my friends lived in. I noticed that we always had potholes on almost every street. We had standing water on the sides of streets during summer months and frozen water on sidewalks during winter months. I have three children in the school district, and I don’t plan on moving anywhere, so I felt the need to inquire about what I saw as a need in my community, my ward and my neighborhood. In addition to my inquiry to the city, I began to speak with my neighbors and residents in my community to get an understanding of their concerns. I took those concerns to the city and saw there was a need for assistance. I have been partnering with the city since. I also noticed that there was a huge gap when it came to communication between the city, city hall and/or city officials. I believed that I could help bridge the gap in communication as well.

What is the top issue in your race and how would you address it? There are many pressing issues that our city faces. I believe the top Issue affecting my candidacy/position is strategic growth planning. Our city is more focused on expansion and growth. Growth pertaining to a city is always a great thing. However, for sometime now we have neglected our already existing communities, neighborhoods, infrastructure, buildings and residents. As alderwoman, I plan to utilize my expertise and experiences to help our city make sound strategic decisions that are not only beneficial to the smart growth of our city but that benefits each and every resident of all genders, classes, races and household makeup. I plan to utilize the connections and assets of the city to obtain any and all assistance that is offered to help build a better city.

Why should people vote for you? As a former military child and spouse, I had the opportunity to travel to, through and live all over the United States. My time and connection with the military broadened my ability to communicate, interact and relate to many different groups, ethnicities and classes of people. As a small business owner, I understand the importance of setting, meeting and balancing budgets. My expertise as a Realtor would allow me to aid the city in responsible growth and expansion. I am anchored in my community. I volunteered with Edwardsville Little Tigers Football Club, as well as Edwardsville Wrestling Club. I also served on the LTF board. I am passionate about partnering, working with, aiding and helping bridge the gap between the city and the residents of Edwardsville.

NAME: BRAD EAVENSON

Age as of April 4, 2023: 67

Campaign website or social media page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100071667601121

Office seeking: Alderman Ward 4, Granite City, IL

Are you an incumbent? Yes

Previous offices sought: Granite City Park Board of Commissioners (Elected); Granite City Alderman Ward 6 (Appointed then Elected); Village of Pontoon Beach (Elected two terms); Granite City Alderman Ward 4 (Elected 2019 and incumbent 2023)

Occupation: Retired Granite City School District administration

Education: Attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Belleville Area College (now Southwestern Illinois College)

Please list the highlights of your civic involvement: As the alderman of Ward 4 for the last four years, I’m proud to have started Neighborhood Watch groups in our area. We increased transparency to the community through our Facebook page making sure residents were better informed about the business of their city. We’ve added several new businesses to in the city with several more to open soon. We worked to improve our housing stock by tearing down deteriorated homes and businesses. We recently completed the construction of a new events center that will open soon. I was a member and the chairman of our Granite City Planning and Zoning Commission prior to holding elected offices. I also served on our Santa’s Holiday Avenue Committee and our Patriots in the Park Committee for over 20 years.

Who are your top three campaign contributors? We fund our own campaign with our personal funds.

Why are you running? I’ve been involved for 30 years in various elected and appointed positions. I enjoy trying to improve our city and to be a small part of moving our city forward. We have much work to do, so I have decided to run once again in 2023.

What is the top issue in your race, and how would you address it? I think the continued transparency to residents is important. Granite City lost so many jobs in the mid- and late-1970s when industry left our area. That resulted in a loss of population and a decrease in median income. Our goal now is to bring new development to the city, especially on Route 3, and to hopefully attract businesses that will bring in higher wages. By improving our housing stock, we hope to attract younger families here who will invest in the community.

Why should people vote for you? I think I’ve been a good representative for not only the people in my ward but throughout the city. I have over 1,500 followers on my aldermanic page, many from outside my ward. People want to know what’s going on and for elected officials to be transparent and accessible. I believe that’s the only promise a candidate can offer. I can’t promise to fix a street or to create new jobs, but I can definitely deliver on the promise to keep them informed and to answer their call when needed.

What is the top issue in your race, and how would you address it?

  1. Taxes and fees for water, sewer and electricity.

  2. Better parks, and art programs for families, etc.
