Who are the 2024 Greasing of the Poles contestants at The Royal Sonesta New Orleans?

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — One of Carnival’s most symbolic events is the “Greasing of the Poles” at the Royal Sonesta New Orleans on Bourbon Street.

In 2023, WGNO Meteorologist Brooke Laizer took home the crown. Who will win for the 54th annual “Greasing of the Poles?”

Back in the day, hotel engineers at The Royal Sonesta New Orleans greased the poles for practical reasons during Mardi Gras.

“This is a celebration that started out as a necessity. It started as a safety concern,” said Royal Sonesta New Orleans General Manager Al Groos.

The goal of greasing the poles is to make sure that partiers don’t climb up the poles to get to the balconies.

“With the grease, if they tried to climb up, then they’d quickly start to fall down and slide down,” said Groos.

Over the years, the pole greasing has turned into a Bourbon Street extravaganza, with local celebrities competing to be the top greaser.

“We’ll always have a cast of characters here,” said Groos.

This year, the competitors are Trishelle Cannatella from MTV’s “The Real World: Las Vegas” and Peacock’s “The Traitors,” social media influencer Emily Smith, social media influencer Triece and 610 Stomper Dan “Maude” Sullivan.

This year’s theme is “R’evolution of Greasing” to honor John Folse, the executive chef of Restaurant R’evolution.

The restaurant recently had a huge refresh, updating its design and menu.

This year’s “Greasing of the Poles” will take place on Friday, Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. WGNO.com will be streaming the competition.

If you do decide to go, make sure to get there early. The entire 300 block of Bourbon Street fills up quickly.
