A 33-year-old man died Friday night after being shot several times, Akron police said Saturday morning.

Police said the man was found about 9:45 p.m. in the 800 block of Beardsley Street. He was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending further investigation and official notifications, the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office said Saturday morning. An autopsy will be conducted Saturday.

Police said a suspect was apprehended at a home near the crime scene. Officers approached the residence and located the suspect, 21-year-old Thomas Ellis III, standing outside.

Ellis was taken into custody without incident and transported to the police station, where a team of detectives met him, police said.

Ellis was charged with murder and felonious assault in connection with the fatal shooting. He was booked into the Summit County Jail on the listed charges.

Police said Ellis had a loaded handgun on him at the time of his arrest that detectives believe may have been used in committing the crime. The incident, investigators believe, stemmed from a prior altercation between the two men.
