Here are the 21 top Ames-area high school sports performers for June 6-12

The 11th-ranked (Class 5A) Ames softball team split a doubleheader with defending 5A state champion Fort Dodge and defeated Waukee and Nevada this past week.

The No. 4 (1A) Collins-Maxwell softball team won three games to remain undefeated at 9-0, Gilbert opened its new baseball and softball complex at Gilbert High School last Wednesday and the Ames baseball team split eight games during a busy week. Ballard went 3-1 in baseball and 2-2 in softball and the Nevada baseball team stretched its win streak to five with a 3-0 week.

Here are the top Ames Tribune-area individual performers for the week:

Ireland Buss

Buss went 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs for the Ames softball team in a 6-2 victory over Waukee. She also finished 2-for-3 and scored the game's only run in a 1-0 upset of defending 5A state champ Fort Dodge during the first game of a doubleheader last week.

Buss also went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs in a 12-0 win over Nevada and was 2-for-4 in an 8-1 loss to Ankeny this past week.

Alexa Kopaska

Kopaska tossed a five-hitter with two strikeouts and three walks for the Ames softball team in the upset victory over Fort Dodge.

She also didn't give up a hit and had five strikeouts and two walks in the victory over Nevada and fired a three-hitter in the win over Waukee.

Kaylee Mescher

Mescher was 2-for-4 with a run for the Ames softball team in the victory over Waukee.

Mescher also went 1-for-3 with two runs and RBIs apiece in the victory over Nevada.

Carlee Schwartz

Schwartz went 9-for-13 with five runs and four RBIs for the Gilbert softball team last week.

Schwartz helped Gilbert defeat Sumner-Fredericksburg by an 8-1 score. The Tigers fell to Winterset in a 12-11 slugfest and Ballard in a 5-3 battle.

Alexis Houge

Houge was 3-for-3 with four runs an RBI and three steals in the Collins-Maxwell softball team's 10-2 victory over Colo-NESCO Friday.

Houge also went 3-for-4 with a double and three steals, runs and RBIs apiece in a 14-0 victory over Tri-County and 3-for-5 with a double, triple, steal and two runs and RBIs apiece in a 12-1 win over Lone Tree Saturday at the Tri-County tournament.

Erica Houge

Houge was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs and she also struck out 10 batters for Collins-Maxwell in its victory over Lone Tree.

Houge also fired a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts and she doubled twice and drove in two runs in the victory over Tri-County. Houge drove in four runs and had five strikeouts in four shutout innings against Colo-NESCO.

Maggie McCrady

McCrady came up big at the plate for the Ballard softball team in victories over Gilbert and Carroll (12-4).

McCrady went 2-for-4 with two RBIs against Gilbert. She was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs and three RBIs against Carroll.

Maggie Mortensen

Mortensen went 2-for-3 with two runs and RBI for the Ballard softball team in the victory over Carroll.

Mortensen also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the victory over Gilbert.

Macy Friest

Friest homered twice and drove in three runs for the Roland-Story softball team in a 9-2 victory over East Marshall June 7.

Friest also went 2-for-2 with two RBIs in a 13-3 victory over PCM, doubled and drove in two runs in a 22-0 win over Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove and 1-for-4 with an RBI in a 10-0 victory over Maple Valley-Anthon Oto.

Madison Geise

Geise gave up two hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in the win over Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto for Roland-Story.

Geise also gave up three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks in the victory over PCM and one run one hit and three walks with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings in the victory over East Marshall. Geise also doubled twice and drove in one run versus the Mustangs.

Gavin Melohn

Melohn was 2-for-2 with a triple and two runs and RBIs apiece for the Nevada baseball team in a 9-1 victory over Perry, 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and one run and RBI apiece in a 4-1 victory over Greene County last week.

Melohn also was 1-for-2 with a run and two walks in an 8-7 triumph over Eagle Grove.

Colin Memmer

Memmer was the winning pitcher for Nevada against Perry.

Memmer only allowed three hits and he had four strikeouts and walks apiece.

Cael Franzen

Franzen tossed a two-hitter for Nevada in the victory over Greene County.

Franzen struck out six batters and only walked one.

Jake Shedarowich

Shedarowich drove in four runs for the Gilbert baseball team in a 10-9 victory over Knoxville.

Shedarowich also drove in a run a 6-5 victory over Ballard and 3-2 victory over Dallas Center-Grimes and he picked up one run and RBI apiece in a 14-6 victory over Des Moines Christian.

Eli Eldred

Eldred was 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI for Gilbert in the win over Knoxville.

He also was the winning pitcher with four strikeouts and one walk in a 9-4 victory over Winterset. Eldred finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs against DMC.

Tommy McGuire

McGuire threw an outstanding game for a freshman pitcher in Gilbert's victory over DCG.

McGuire tossed four shutout innings and gave up just two hits with four strikeouts.

Andrew Grover

Grover was 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs and two RBIs for the Colo-NESCO baseball team in a 13-12 victory over Iowa Valley.

Grover also doubled in a 5-2 victory over Collins-Maxwell.

Spencer Hansen

Hansen was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs for Colo-NESCO in a 9-2 victory over Riceville.

He also was the winning pitcher against Collins-Maxwell after allowing one hit and striking out four with two walks in 3 2/3 innings. Hansen was 2-for-6 with a run in the victory over Iowa Valley.

Eli Rouse

Rouse fired a one-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Ballard baseball team in a 1-0 victory over Winterset June 6.

Rouse also singled for one of only two Bomber hits against the Huskies. He was 1-for-3 with two RBIs in a 13-6 victory over South Hamilton, 2-for-3 with two runs and RBIs apiece in a 12-2 victory over Carroll and 1-for-5 with a run against Gilbert.

Mario Napolitano

Napolitano fired a four-hitter with three strikeouts and two walks for the Ames baseball team in a 5-0 victory over Urbandale June 9.

He also was 2-for-3 with a run in a 5-2 victory over Fort Dodge and doubled and drove in a run in a 3-0 win over the Dodgers. He went 2-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece in a 7-4 victory over Ankeny.

Carter Geffre

Geffre drove in seven runs over eight games for Ames during the week.

He also threw a masterful game in the 3-0 victory over Fort Dodge. Geffre tossed a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and one walk.
