Buffaloe’s Watering Hole at 4924 Wrightsville Ave. in Wilmington boasts that it has the coldest beer in town. Since it opened in 1964, the store has become a go-to spot to get a keg or pick up snacks and a bottle of wine. Now, you can also get burgers, breakfast sandwiches, cheesesteaks, French fries and more there, too.

“We wanted it to be the place where you could grab whatever you wanted, including food,” said Joshua Adam, manager. And, like the store, the kitchen is open 24 hours a day.

“Whether it’s 4 p.m. or 4 a.m. and you want a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, you can get one,” he said.

The menu is simple, developed with the help of customers and the staff. You can find three varieties of breakfast sandwiches, with egg, cheese and a choice of bacon, ham or sausage. Other options include club sandwiches, tuna salad, BLTs, hot dogs and barbecue, as well as sides like fries, fried mushrooms and mozzarella sticks.  A kid's menu adds chicken tenders and a grilled cheese.

“Probably the most popular are cheesesteaks,” Adam said. “We sell a lot of cheesesteaks. And burgers... our burgers are really good. They’re like a cross between home-cooking and fine dining.”

On the counter, you can also find a selection of baked goods, like blueberry lemon poundcake and cookies.

Adam has been working at the store for three years, the same amount of time that management of the shop has returned to the Buffaloe family. Earl Buffaloe first opened it as a grocery almost 60 years ago. For more than a decade, the Buffaloe family leased the property to other managers. But Andy Buffaloe, Earl’s grandson, started running it again a few years ago, Adam said.

For most of that time, the on-site kitchen has been in the works there. It’s taken about two years to get it operational and permitted, he said.

He added that customers watching the progress has been helpful in building anticipation. Now, the kitchen has been open a few weeks and diners are saying it was worth the wait.

"It's just been building by word of mouth," he said.
