Fox's efforts to bring back the 24 franchise have so far produced the ill-fated 24: Legacy, which survived only one season before it was axed by the network

However, it has also been actively looking into a prequel series focusing on a younger version of counter-terrorism agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), as well as a fairly radical overhaul in the form of a real-time legal thriller centred on a female prosecutor.

Well, it's now been confirmed that neither project is moving ahead anymore. Dammit Fox!

Teasing about a possible reboot in the future, Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier said at the Television Critics Association winter press tour (via Deadline) : "The power of these franchises is not to be toyed with, and 24 was an iconic moment in television, and when and if we bring it back, it will be because the creators and writers feel like they have the right story to tell, they can honour the franchise and the studio and the network feel the same way.

"I'd be very open to working with [producer] Howard [Gordon] and everyone else but nothing new to report."

So don't give up hope just yet. Collier added that the network takes any potential revival "very seriously" and will only happen when they "get it right".

Last year, Sutherland expressed excitement about the potential female-led revival series, calling the concept "brilliant".

"To take it out of the anti-terrorist format I think is really smart," he said.

"In this specific instance, they're talking about a female attorney who has 24 hours to bring the stay of execution to her client or he dies – that's a really fascinating idea."
