School officials are completing negotiations to buy land along Ballenger Creek Pike for a new high school. The contract is for 45 acres and the deal should be complete in the next few days. Central County High School is expected to open September 2004. Its attendance area would be drawn to relieve crowding at Frederick and Gov. Thomas Johnson high schools.

Frederick County could suffer irreparable damage when it comes to economic development if the proposed cement plant in Frederick is scrapped, Bryan Duncan, county economic and community development commission executive director said Tuesday. Mr. Duncan was referring to community protests of a proposal to build a CSR Hydro Conduit plant on Rosenstock Farm off Gas House Pike.

Frederick city inspectors used air masks and protective clothing Tuesday to trudge through nearly five feet of garbage in a house infested with roaches and fleas before deciding to condemn it. "This is the worst I've ever seen in terms of filth and sanitation of a home. There is no way this environment could sustain human functions," said Michael Blank, Frederick city code enforcement officer, of the house on Catoctin Avenue.
