A 25-year-old man died when a Freightliner truck turned in front of the SUV he was riding in Thursday morning on US 27.

The accident happened shortly after 5 a.m. at U.S. 27 and Cypress Gardens Boulevard east of Winter Haven. The Polk County Sheriff's Office said a white 2013 Freightliner truck driven by Jeffrey Glover, 23, of Lake Wales was traveling north on U.S. 27 and attempted to turn west onto Cypress Gardens Boulevard on a red light. The truck turned into the path of a southbound 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe, which entered the intersection on a green light, and the vehicles collided, according to the Sheriff's Office.

A 25-year-old man, who was a passenger in the Tahoe, died at the scene. A 38-year-old male passenger in the Tahoe was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and was in critical condition Thursday afternoon, according to the Sheriff's Office. The driver of the Tahoe, a 22-year old Haines City man, and a 24-year old male passenger suffered only minor injuries.

The Sheriff's Office said no criminal charges are expected at this time, but as the investigation continues civil charges are likely.

Parts of U.S. 27 and Cypress Gardens Boulevard were closed for about four hours Thursday.
